You will need:
Cotton crochet thread (bedspread-weight)
Stiff cardboard
22mm wood beads
Upholstery Needle
Cut two pieces cardboard: 1 at 4 x 6½ - 1 at 4 x 4½
BODY: Wrap crochet thread around 6½ cardboard 200 times
Using a large upholstery needle, slide 8 inches of crochet thread between cardboard and bundled thread. Tie into knot. Slide knotted bundle from cardboard.
HEAD: Insert 22mm wood bead beneath knotted end of bundle. Arrange threads around ball to cover. Tie 4" thread underneath the ball, tightly. You now have a head and body.
ARMS: Wrap crochet thread around 4½ cardboard 50 times. Do not tie knot on this bundle, just carefully slide off cardboard. Go back to the body and split body threads in half. Lay the arm bundle in center, horizontally (loop to left, loop to right), underneath head. Put the two halves of the body threads back together and tie tightly underneath horizontal threads. You now have a head, arms and waist.
HANDS: Tie 4" thread around each arm - 1/2 inch from end of loop.
SKIRT or LEGS: You can even off the threads of the lower body to make a skirt or, for legs, you can divide lower body into halves, knot thread around each half about 1" from end. Clip bottom to even off.
CLOTHES: Be creative. Bead a necklace, add a strip of cloth, a feather and voilą - an indian. A little apron, a few inches of fabric gathered down the middle, held together by sewing ribbon at that middle and lace at the brim for a bonnet, makes a cute little pioneer.
